ASIAN PARA GAMES GUANGZHOU 2010 – COMPETITIONS FOR BLIND ATHLETES IN FULL SWING

Asian Para Games 2010 logoThe Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, China, are well underway and blind and partially sighted athletes are competing for medals in a variety of sports.

Athletes with disabilities from all over Asia are taking part in this major event, which follows on from the recent Asian Games in the same city and uses the same organisational structure and sports facilities.

Blind and partially sighted athletes are competing in seven of the nineteen sports on offer: athletics, swimming, judo, ten-pin bowling, cycling, five-a-side football (futsal) and goalball.

The programmes for athletics, swimming, ten-pin bowling and cycling include specific events for the visually impaired in a multi-disability programme, while judo, goalball and football five-a-side are exclusively for VI athletes.

The goalball tournament features competitions for men’s and women’s teams. There are nine teams in the men’s competition (China, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan and Thailand) and five women’s teams entered (China, Iran, Japan, Korea and Laos).
