ANTALYA 2011 WELL ON COURSE AS FINAL SITE INSPECTIONS TAKE PLACE

The IBSA team visits the swimming facilities. The 4th IBSA World Championships and Games, to be held in Antalya, Turkey, from April 1st to April 10th, are taking shape and preparations are on course for what is set to be one of the biggest sports events of the year.

Antalya 2011 will bring together blind and partially sighted sportsmen and sportswomen from all over the world for a ten-day event featuring competitions in eight sports – athletics, swimming, judo, goalball, B1 futsal, B2/B3 futsal, powerlifting and chess.

The World Championships and Games are hosted by GESFED, the Turkish Blind Sports Federation, and follow on from successful previous games in Madrid, Spain (1998), Quebec, Canada (2003) and Sao Paulo (2007).

The quality and suitability of the sports facilities and accommodation on offer to participants were confirmed during the final site inspections for the games, which took place in mid-December.

IBSA Sports Director Radu Rosenthal and Development Director Neil O’Donovan travelled to Turkey to meet Secretary General and head of the Local Organising Committee, Mesut Dedeoglu, to inspect the sites. Also in attendance were Hamid Sharifian, member of the IBSA Swimming Subcommittee, and several members of the Turkish Blind Sports Federation’s sports technical committees.

The inspection team visited the venues for the Antalya-based sports and the main hotel for the event, the QE Hotel in Antalya, before moving on to Alanya, where the swimming competition will take place, to inspect the pool and accommodation.

Top quality back-up venues for all sports have also been secured if required.

The IBSA World Championships in swimming and athletics in Antalya have been recognised and approved by the International Paralympic Committee.

The Goalball and Judo competitions are qualifiers for the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

Second entry forms for the 4th IBSA World Championships and Games Antalya 2011 must be submitted by Saturday January 15th to [email protected].
