SLOVENIA AND THE NETHERLANDS TAKE GOLD AT 2009 IBSA WORLD SHOWDOWN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Jana Führer from Slovenia (women’s event) and Sven van de Wege from the Netherlands (men’s event) took gold at the IBSA World Showdown Championships in Sweden. In the triple (team event), Slovenia ran out winners, taking their gold medal tally to two out of three.
Führer defeated Hanna Vilmi from Finland in a close-fought final. The top ten women’s finishers were:

In the men’s tournament van de Wege beat Teemu Ruohonen, also from Finland, in the final. The bronze medal went to local player Zebastian Modin. The final top-ten standings in the event are as follows:

A strong Slovenian team proved too good for Finland in the team event final. The Netherlands ran out third ahead of the Czech Republic.

The 2009 IBSA World Showdown Championships were hosted by the SIF Synskadades Idrottsförening (The Sports Association For Visually Impaired in Sweden) under a commission from SHIF Svenska Handikappidrottsförbundet (the Swedish Handicapped Sports Association).
Thirty-six players representing fifteen countries competed in the men’s event, and sixteen women from seven nations took part in the women’s tournament.
