4TH IBSA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND GAMES KICK OFF IN TURKEY
 The 4th IBSA World Championships and Games began yesterday with a spectacular opening ceremony in Antalya, Turkey.
The ceremony, featuring whirling dervishes, local traditional dancing and pop performances, was held at the Kepez Sports centre.
Almost 1 000 athletes from over 60 countries have gathered in Antalya for competitions in athletics, swimming, futsal B1, futsal B2/B3, goalball, judo, powerlifting and chess.
Events in athletics, swimming, futsal B1, futsal B2/B3, chess and goalball get underway today, while judo and powerlifting start tomorrow.
The IBSA World Championships and Games, IBSA’s showcase event, provides blind and partially sighted sportsmen and sportswomen from around the globe with a platform for elite performance in competition with their peers in a number of sports, demonstrating to the world that they are “Capable of Everything”.
The 4th IBSA World Championships and Games Antalya 2011 follow on from previous successful events in Madrid, Spain (1998), Quebec, Canada (2003) and Sao Paulo, Brazil (2007).
The championship programme features IBSA World Championships in athletics, swimming and powerlifting and IBSA World Games in goalball, judo, futsal B1, futsal B2/B3 and chess. The competitions in athletics, swimming, goalball and judo are part of the qualification process for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
