RESULTS FROM BIATHLON AND CROSS-COUNTRY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
First results from blind and partially sighted events at the 2009 IPC Biathlon and Cross-Country World Championships in Vuokatti, Finland, have now been made available.
Russia has swept the board in women’s events so far, taking gold, silver and bronze in both the Biathlon Pursuit, held on Sunday January 25th, and the Cross-Country 10/15/20km Classic (Monday January 26th).
In the Biathlon Pursuit, Polina Kameneva (B2), with guide Pavel Saksin, took gold, followed by compatriots Tatiana Ilyuchenko (B3, guided by Valeriy Koshkin) and Liubov Vasileva (B2, guided by Natalia Yakimova).
In the women’s 15km cross-country event the following day, Tatiana Ilyuchenko won the gold medal, followed by Liubov Vasileva and Mikhalina Lysova.
Russia also took to the podium in the men’s events. Evgeniy Safronov (RUS, B2, guided by Gumerov Ural) won the men’s Biathlon Pursuit from Ukrainian Vitaliy Lukyanenko (B3, guide Volodymyr Ivanov). Russia’s Nikolay Polukhin (B2, guided by Andrev Tokarev) took bronze.
Europe’s dominance was broken in the 20km Cross-country event, with Canada’s Brian McKeever (B3, guided by brother Robin McKeever) winning gold from Russia’s Nikolay Polukhin. Frank Hoefle (B2, guide Johannes Wachlin) from Germany took bronze.
Relay events are scheduled for today and the Cross-Country 5/10km free technique events will be held tomorrow.
