The ball is kicked off. This is a
classic football expression which, in this case, expresses two
realities. One can be sensed - with the tremendous reception and
satisfaction Football has produced in all the countries that
attended the IBSA General Assembly in CASABLANCA (Morocco), and
were able to examine the ball, video and regulations for the two
categories envisaged: B1 and B2/B3
¡WHAT A GOOOOAL!
REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
IN FIVE-A-SIDE FOOTBALL FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED
 |
The
other reality is more concrete: in September, the first
Regional Championships will be disputed on the two
continents where the practice and development of this
sport has been constant and extensive: I European
Championship, to be held in SANTA COLOMA DE GRAMANET -
Barcelona (Spain), and the I American Championship, to be
held in ASUNCION (Paraguay), at the end of September.
This sport, which
proves most attractive for the blind and visually
impaired, is also played in EGYPT, COTE D'IVOIRE, SOUTH
AFRICA, MALAYSIA, USA and AUSTRALIA, and it is now taking
off in the Eastern European countries. IBSA provides an
ideal vehicle for its expansion with its regulations,
based on those of the FIFA for Five-a-side Football,
adapted to meet the needs of the blind and visually
impaired in this team sport; the dimensions of the
playing area and the number of players facilitate the
enjoyment of the game and the orientation of the players,
their safety ensured by the logical adaptations for the
B1 category, and the few - although necessary -
modifications for the B2/B3 class.

In SANTA COLOMA
DE GRAMANET, this autumn and in ASUNCION (Paraguay), the
ball will start rolling. These will be the first Regional
Championships, in this case European and American,
organised by IBSA. The Spanish teams will be welcoming
representatives from GREAT BRITAIN, GREECE, ITALY, FRANCE
and PORTUGAL, amongst others. On the other side of the
Atlantic, Paraguay will be welcoming ARGENTINA, COLOMBIA,
URUGUAY, PERU and BRAZIL, to name but the most
well-known.

In the 1930's, or perhaps
earlier, blind Football was practised in schools and, in the
1960's, the different International Championships started up. The
Regional Championships were organised through IBSA and now the
World Championship will be held in 1998, possibly in Brazil.
This gives us the full
right to be present at SYDNEY 2000 or at the 2004 Games. The
truth of the matter is that the ball is still rolling and its
buzz can already be heard on all five continents.
