Under the technical direction of Pau Serracanta (Chairperson of IBSA's Alpine Skiing Subcommittee), the Championships began on the 22nd with the slalom event. The B1-Women's category only had two participants and at least three skiers are needed for the event to be held. NATACHA CHEVALLEY (Switzerland) and KLAUDIA BIRKNER (United States) had to compete in the B2 category, which put them at a clear disadvantage when it came to winning medals. The Swiss girl was one of the favourites in these Championships and her team's trump card, but an injury prevented her from taking part in this first event.
The B1-Men's category had four participants: the youngest skier at the competition - only 16 years old, OLIVER LALOUX (Belgium), the Austrian LEOPOLD ERTL, the Italian ANGELO ZANOTTI and the Spaniard CRISTIAN SAINZ DE MARLES. In the first round, ZANOTTI led the way followed by the Spanish skier and, in the second round, ZANOTTI again obtained the best time. CRISTIAN was disqualified after missing one gate, thus losing all hope of winning a medal. The medals were therefore awarded as follows:
In the B2-Women's category, the slalom event turned into a duel between the Austrian DOS-KELLNER and the Spanish girl MAGDA AMO. The Austrian skier achieved the best times, both in the first and second rounds, and made it to first place. Magda Amo had to make do with the silver and the French girl PASCALE CASANOVA won the bronze. As for B2-Men, JUAN CARLOS MOLINA (Spain) maintained an excellent standard throughout the two rounds and obtained the best times, followed by his fellow countryman ERIC VILLALON just 2 seconds behind, with the Slovak skier STEFAN KOPCIK finishing 5 seconds behind Molina. It is worth noting that the times obtained by JUAN CARLOS MOLINA from Granada throughout the competition were very similar to those of the winners of the superior category.
In the B3-Men's event, the Italians OBERHAMMER and DAL MAISTRO and the French skier JEAN NOEL ARBEZ were the most outstanding in both rounds. All three managed to improve on their times in the second round. JEAN NOEL knocked 6 seconds off his time to win the gold medal. GIAN MARIA DAL MAISTRO reduced his time by 3 seconds to achieve the silver and BRUNO OBERHAMMER had to make do with third position, despite improving on his first-round time.
The B3-Women's event only drew three participants, with the result that only the gold and silver were at stake and they both went to the Czech Republic. KATERINA TEPLA literally thrashed her two rivals, the other Czech girl SABINE ROGIE, who won the silver, and the veteran United States skier, NANCY ANDREWS.
