TURKEY TO HOST 4TH IBSA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND GAMES IN 2011
IBSA has announced that Turkey is to host its World Championships and Games in 2011. The event - the showcase for blind sports worldwide - will be hosted by GESFED, the Turkish Blind Sports Federation, and held in the Mediterranean city of Antalya.
IBSA is now working in partnership with GESFED to set the dates for the championships and decide on the competition programme. The programme is likely to feature IBSA world championships in athletics and swimming, plus world games in judo and futsal and competitions in other IBSA sports.
A pre-contract to host the games was signed at the Sports Technical Committee meeting in Antalya last week by GESFED President and IBSA Secretary General Mesut Dedeoğlu and IBSA Sports Director Radu Rosenthal.
The STC meeting brought together those in charge of many IBSA sports to discuss recent events and future development plans, set the groundwork for an IBSA Classification Code based on functional classification and continue work on IBSA compliance with the WADA Anti-Doping Code. In addition, participants were taken for an initial site inspection of the venues likely to be used at the 2011 World Championships and Games.
Turkey was selected to organise the event following a successful bid process in which a number of countries expressed interest in hosting.
Antalya 2011 follows on from the successful world championships and games held in Madrid (1998), Quebec (2003) and Sao Paulo (2007). Up to one thousand blind and partially sighted sportsmen and sportswomen are expected to compete in what is IBSA’s showcase event. In total, over one thousand five hundred people will be involved in the event.
