IRELAND’S JASON SMYTH SETS NEW B3 100 METRES WORLD RECORD AT 2008 PARALYMPIC WORLD CUP
Jason Smyth from Ireland broke his own B3 (T13) 100 metres world record at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester, Great Britain, on Sunday last. The 21-year-old from Derry shaved a hundredth of a second off his own B3 lifetime best to cross the line in a time of 10.85 seconds.
But the Irishman insists there is still more to come at the Paralympic Games in China in September: “I will be at my peak in Beijing so I know I can go quicker. It’s good to come out in my first race of the season and run a good time. I’m happy with it but I’m always trying to go faster.”
The cycling competition saw an outstanding performance from visually impaired three-time Paralympic Judo gold medallist Simon Jackson, who only took up the sport three weeks ago. Jackson scooped silver in the tandem in 1.04.982 minutes.
The 35-year-old said: “I’m not even in my third week of cycling yet so it is absolutely fantastic. I’ve got a new lease of life now. I got a back injury about a year and a half ago which forced me to give up judo. But I still wanted to compete – and Manchester, and possibly Beijing is a great platform to do just that.”
