Blind Archery, the most recent sport to have official status within IBSA, is now to be presented to the IPC Archery Sports Assembly.
A motion to accept blind archery as an additional category at IPC world championships as well as at regional championships and tournaments etc., will be presented to the Sports Assembly in Massa Cararra, Italy in October. The meeting takes place at the IPC Archery World Championships, where blind archers from Great Britain, France, Belgium and Italy (maybe more) have been invited to compete in exhibition events in an endeavour to show the IPC nations that blind archery should be accepted as an additional category.
IPC Archery was waiting until blind archery had IBSA status before they would consider its inclusion at IPC events. It is accepted that to begin with, there will only be two categories, male and female, wearing blackouts/shades. (There are eight categories within IBSA archery accommodating the differing levels of vision.)
Depending on the motion being accepted, it could be the second step toward blind archery being a Paralympics event, IBSA status being the first.
This is great news, as blind archers should at last have the same aspirations as any other archer to compete at the highest level.
